Arnaud Willig (FRA)

Arnaud Willig is one of the oldest gymnasts of the French team at almost 30 years old. Over the years he has managed to become vital to the team. Now he hopes to become part of the selected gymnasts to represent France in Rio.

What made you start gymnastics?

My brother was did gymnastics. I was with my mother every time she went for him in training, and then it made me want doing it as well.

What is a typical day like?

I have training twice a day. Meanwhile I try to rest to be in form. On weekends I spend time with family. They are very important to me because they support me a lot.

What is your gymnastics’ best memory?

First in 2005: we participated to the Mediterranean Games and it was my first major international competition. A san individual I ranked second in all-around and high bar. As a team we won the bronze medal. My second favorite memory is Rotterdam, where we ranked 5th in the World Championships team event.

Do you feel more pressure with a European Championships organized in France, with the French audience?

Yes it is more pressure but it’s very positive way. We are in front of our friends, our family, and we know they are behind us cheering us.

The shoulder surgery you had this summer prevented you from participating in the World Championships in Nanning in October. If you are selected, these European Championships are therefore special to you?

Of course if I am selected, it would be really good news for me. This would mean first a return to competition at the international level. I am planning to come back in the French Nationals in Rouen in less than 3 weeks. This would also be my first time at a European Championship in France because I did not participate in the 2012 edition, already held in Montpellier.

Thomas-BouhailThomas Bouhail about Arnaud : « I know Arnaud for 20 years now. He is a really hard-working gymnast. I wish him to be part of the team for Rio because he really deserves it. «
