This Sunday 19th April was the last day of the European Championships in Montpellier. The Park & Suites Arena was sold out, it was « the place to be » this afternoon ! Beam and men’s vault finals opened this last day of apparatus finals.
On the beam, Andrea Munteanu impressed the judges and the public with a score of 14,366 points. The young Romanian gymnast was one of the only finalist who did not make mistakes. It was a final with many mistakes from top leaders. On the second place, Becky Downie from Great Britain scored 14,300 points with a consistent routine. The surprise was created by French gymnast Claire Martin who took the bronze medal with a beautiful routine (14,200 points).
Gymnasts on the men’s vault final performed in a high way : all the vaults were amazing ! The Russians continued their good crop of European medals here in Montpellier : Nikita Nagornyy took the gold with two impressive vaults, without big mistakes (15,099). Denis Abliazin (Russia) and Igor Radivilov (Ukraine) shared the second place with a score of 15,083 points.
During the men’s competition, some medals were shared… the parallels bars final had the same scenario : Marius Berbecar from Romania and Christian Baumann, the young Swiss star, took the same medal : the silver one, scoring 15,300 points. Oleg Verniaiev kept his crown and his leadership on this apparatus with the big score of 15,866 points.
Women’s floor final had a very high level too : some gymnasts made big acrobatics lines (like full in, triple twists). She played her cards right on this apparatus : with 14,733 points, the Russian gymnast Ksenya Afanasaeva took the gold, while the British girl Claudia Fragapane impressed the arena with her explosive routine and took the silver medal (14,633). The amazing Giulia Steingruber from Switzerland won her third medal here in Montpellier : bronze with 14,466 points.
The gymnasts on high bar final put on a show for these 6th European Championships. With 14,833 points, Marijo Moznik from Croatia made a consistent routine that helped him to grasp the gold medal. The British gymnast Sam Oldham, who was just coming back from an injury, took the silver medal with 14,766 points. Greece can be proud of its gymnast Vlasios Maras who got the bronze medal with 14,666 points.
